While the boss is away, the employees play

For the most part, I absolutely love my work.  All morning I cook in professional kitchen and all afternoon I play around with chemicals + drugs.  Constant bustle. Perpetually on your toes.  Free coffee. What is there not to love?  But, I am honestly relishing being able to sleep into 9 o’clock this week. Completely unheard of in my world.  (For those of you who don’t know, I am the epitome of the “early bird.”  At seven thirty, I am up and ready to steamroll the day.)

Apart from sleeping in, I have found a whole other host of amusements that have more than shanghaied my new found free-time.  For one, it is bloody amazing how many books a person can manage to consume when they are not REQUIRED to read them.  I came home from school with a stack of novels taller than my bead side table.  In fact, it became a lovely pedestal for my tea and misplaced hair ties.  A literary Tower-of-Pisa.

Currently I am working on the remainder of the epic stack—pretty much simultaneously. (Yes, I am one of those naughty readers).

If anyone is a science nerd like me, I HIGHLY recommend any of the books my Mary Roach.   She makes dead bodies and space-pee hilarious. :P  Space pee = all of the waste receptacle dumps conducted during astronaut missions into the great void.  Since it roughly -370deg C in space, everything dumped turns into pretty ice-crystals.

On a completely different subject matter, the HBO television series Game of Thrones has literally become a not-so-guilty obsession.  Ever since The Event was canceled and I finished watching all the episodes of Tutor, I have been on the hunt for a program with an equally developed plot.  Thrones covers an intense story that blends history, mythology and fantasy into haunting and engaging visual.   Right from the start, the series interweaves 4 different plot lines together seamlessly.  Intricate?  Yes.  But there is more than enough unexpected surprises and humorous detours… J (Tyrion! hehe). Since the concept/characters are based on a series of books written by George R R Martin, I have high hopes that this series will be well paced for the long haul.

While I am vegging out with the Thrones gang, I drink a BIG cup of coffee and plaster folders with collages.  I feel like a freaking five-year-old with a paint set.  It is pure bliss.

Here are a few of my more completed ones (still pending lamination—sorry, mum!).

They are primarily a mixture of different ticket stubs, newspaper + magazine cut outs, cookie boxes, paper scraps etc.  I find it magical how they all start with a blank background and morph into an organized chaos.  They make me smile.  I mean to use them at Uni.  How can I not be excited about Human-Bio and Chem 101 lecture when all of my notes are encased in these?

Well, I fully intended for this to be “short” post.  But—as you can clearly see from the ridiculous amount of text above—that didn’t work out so well.  Please let me know what your amusements have been these past few weeks!  Any page-turning books?  Addictive TV series?  I’ve got a few more days left to savor leisurely mornings…

Cheers, kaite ;]
